The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has clarified reports circulating on blogs alleging that the Federal Government and its Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, were unconcerned about the arrest of a Nigerian student by Chinese police for alleged financial crimes.
In a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, NIDCOM, the Commission stated that the matter had already been taken up by the Nigerian Embassy in China and is receiving “necessary attention and thorough investigation.”
Nigerians wishing to petition or contact the Commission were advised to do so via email at admin@nidcom.gov.ng, through its Abuja or Lagos offices, or on its verified social media handles, including its X (formerly Twitter) account @nidcom_gov.
The statement also noted that Dabiri-Erewa has consistently used her personal social media handles to address diaspora issues but lamented that her account was hacked, leading to the loss of over one million followers. It further described X as “a highly toxic space which has defeated the purpose of using it as a decent tool of communication.”
Reassuring Nigerians in the diaspora, the Commission pledged continued robust engagement and prioritisation of their welfare in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the 4Ds Foreign Policy Agenda of Democracy, Demography, Development, and Diaspora.
