Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF, confirmed the timeframe for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) during a press briefing following the confederation’s executive committee meeting on Friday.

He noted that the exact start dates for the tournament will be revealed “in due course.”

The 2027 AFCON is set to be co-hosted by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.

Motsepe dismissed rumours suggesting that CAF might strip the three nations of their hosting rights due to alleged unpreparedness, calling the reports “totally unfounded” and confirming that the tournament will proceed as planned.

The CAF president also revealed plans to expand the AFCON from 24 to 28 teams, allowing four additional countries to participate in future editions.

In December 2025, CAF had announced that AFCON would shift to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, moving away from the traditional biennial schedule.

Additionally, the confederation confirmed that it will launch the African Nations League in 2029, further expanding continental football competitions.
