Arsenal have opened discussions with midfielder Declan Rice over a new long-term contract as the Premier League leaders aim to secure one of their key players for the coming years.

Rice, 27, joined the club from West Ham in 2023 for a reported £105 million and has quickly become one of Europe’s standout midfielders.

Since his arrival, he has made 102 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and earned 72 caps for England.

According to BBC Sport on Friday, the England international still has two years left on his current contract, with an option to extend for an additional 12 months.

Arsenal are now proposing a pay rise for Declan Rice, aiming to make him one of the club’s highest earners.

For context, teammate Bukayo Saka recently signed a four-and-a-half-year deal worth a minimum of £300,000 per week, while Rice currently earns a reported £240,000 per week.

Discussions are still in the early stages, with no set timeline for completion, but Arsenal are eager to secure Rice’s commitment during the peak years of his career.

The move comes as Arsenal continue to prioritise securing the futures of their key players.

Over the past year, the club has extended contracts for Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri, while also holding talks with Jurrien Timber over a new deal.

Goalkeeper David Raya and forward Leandro Trossard have recently received improved contracts, although their deals were extended without additional time.

Arsenal currently top the Premier League, seven points clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand. The Gunners will host Everton on Saturday as City travel to West Ham, keeping their bid for a first league title since 2004, during Arsene Wenger’s tenure, very much alive.
