Former Brazil international Oscar has retired from professional football at the age of 34 due to cardiac issues, his club, Sao Paulo, confirmed on Saturday.

The attacking midfielder was hospitalized for five days in November after fainting during a routine medical examination and has not featured in any match since then.

Medical reports revealed a vasovagal syncope, caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure, heart rate, and cerebral blood flow, prompting the player to bring his career to an end. He still had a contract with the club running until 2027.

“I am ending a career here in Sao Paulo that has taken me practically to the four corners of the world,” the former Chelsea and Shanghai Port player said in a statement released by the club.

Oscar spent five seasons at Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles and the Europa League, before moving to Shanghai in 2017. During his time in China, he secured three Chinese Super League titles.

He returned to Sao Paulo in 2025, the club where he began his professional career.

The midfielder earned 48 caps for Brazil, winning the FIFA Confederations Cup and representing the country at the 2014 World Cup on home soil.
