The Senate is stepping up efforts to modernize Nigeria’s agricultural colleges and research institutions by seeking international support for reforms, technology transfer, and investment.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, stated this in a release on Sunday in Abuja.

He said the committee had engaged the diplomatic missions of Malaysia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Union to advance plans for revitalizing agricultural education and research across the country.

“Alli emphasized that the National Assembly is committed to leveraging global expertise to boost productivity, strengthen institutional capacity, and foster job creation, especially in rural communities.

These engagements precede the First National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Research Institutions, scheduled for May 11–13 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The visits aim to inform the governments of China, the EU, Brazil, the UK, Germany, India, and Malaysia about the committee’s planned activities and to secure their support, collaboration, and partnership for the summit and expo,” Alli said.

He explained that the initiative seeks to enhance institutional capacity, raise visibility, and promote programs that drive sustainable development in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

“All stakeholders have a crucial role in creating sustainable, productive agricultural models that tackle global challenges, improve rural livelihoods, and reduce hunger,” he added.

The statement noted that the summit will mobilize global support, strengthen institutional frameworks, and showcase innovations to accelerate agricultural transformation in Nigeria.

The committee is forming strategic partnerships with leading agricultural nations to foster research collaboration, mechanization, and adoption of modern farming techniques.

During a discussion with the Malaysian High Commission, the committee highlighted Malaysia’s expertise in palm oil production and its potential contribution to Nigeria’s agro-industrial development and value chain optimization.

The lawmakers also praised the EU’s support for oil palm research in Nigeria and called for deeper collaboration to address issues such as climate change, soil degradation, and food security.

Alli further revealed that talks with China and Germany focused on agricultural engineering, precision farming, and research-driven innovation to improve productivity and sustainability in the sector.
