President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South LGA of Ogun State, along with a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its development.

According to a statement on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the approval aligns with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows the institution to function as a multi-campus university nationwide.

The funding, drawn from TETFund’s 2026 allocation, will be used to provide key infrastructure, academic buildings, student housing, and essential training facilities at the new site.

Onanuga explained that the choice of Erinja followed a high-level consultative meeting involving the Ministers of Police Affairs and Education, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Universities Commission. The discussions considered issues such as student capacity, funding, academic standards, and the Police Force’s expanding training needs amid ongoing recruitment.

The Presidency said Tinubu believes the expansion will enhance institutional governance, improve policing education, and strengthen national security.

Until now, the Nigeria Police Academy operated only one campus in Wudil, Kano State.

Under Section 3 of the Police Act, the Academy is permitted—subject to NUC approval—to establish additional campuses and academic units as needed.

Lawmakers had earlier, in June 2025, urged the government to decentralise the Academy by creating campuses across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in line with the 2021 Act.

Originally established in 1988 using temporary sites in Kano and Kaduna, the Academy was later consolidated in Wudil in 1996 and upgraded to degree-awarding status in 2012 as Nigeria’s 37th federal university.

It currently runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields such as law enforcement, law, sciences, social sciences, management, and humanities.

The Ogun campus will be the first satellite campus established under the 2021 Act.
