IK Osakioduwa: I Have Never Received Money To Play Any Artistes Song On The Radio

Early this morning, revered Nigerian media personality and Rhythm FM OAP; IK Osakioduwa took to Instagram to weigh in on the age-long payola debate. Condemning the act, IK explained that putting monetary demands on young artistes who in many cases have zero support before agreeing to offer them airplay is heartless and can be likened to the practices of corrupt politicians.
“In my entire radio career, I have never received money to play any artistes song on the radio. I think its wrong – I think it makes life difficult for budding artists. They pay so much money that they haven’t made yet. And then to collect money from them is just heartless. We can’t keep complaining about politicians and policemen who take bribes if we are going to be radio presenters who are going to be taking money from people who make music which is our job to play”, he stressed.
What spurred his decision to speak on the issue remains unknown, but the discourse of payola in Nigeria is one that has been ongoing for many years. Hopefully, other radio and media personalities will take a cue from IK, refrain from the act and begin to use their positions to show genuine support to budding musicians.
