EXPERTS LAMENT UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH IN CYBERCRIME BY 30% IN AFRICA

Industry leaders at the third Africa Cyber Security Conference in Abudjan, Ivory Coast on Wednesday, lamented the rate at which hackers are increasing in Africa and called for investment in cyber security.
They noted that cyber threats don’t have limitations, as pirates can hack into anything that moves. The rate of attack has moved from 20% to 30% and there are possibilities of further increase.
Leader of IBM’s elite security unity, Michel Bobillier, explained that the imagination of hackers have become very great, “they have organisations, real structured ecosystems, with a great deal of money and technology”, to unveil complex attacks.
Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, calculated the annual loss of Nigeria to cybercrime at N127billion.
Orange CyberDefense- a subsidiary of multinational telecoms operator, in its effort to increase cyber security intends to launch a hub in Morocco in 2019 with satellites in Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Senegal.
Managing Director of Orange CyberDefense, Michel Van den Berghe, in a telephone interview with AFP forecast that the cyber security market in Africa will increase from 1.7 billion dollars (1.5billion euros) in 2017 to more than 2.5 billion in 2020.
He explained that, cybercrime has the capacity to rescind confident in the development of digital technology and advised companies that wish to invest in Africa to take adequate measures in combating cybercrime.
