The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division has launched a new partnership with the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC), in a move officials describe as a strategic effort to enhance air-ground coordination in the North-West.
The collaboration was formalized during a courtesy visit by AWDC Commandant Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Jibia to the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY), Major General Bemgba Koughna, in Sokoto on Thursday.
Major General Koughna praised Air Vice Marshal Jibia for his “distinguished career marked by leadership excellence across multiple command roles” and pledged that the division would provide “full support and proactive cooperation” to strengthen joint operations.
“Dialogue and collaboration remain central to tackling shared operational challenges. We are committed to supporting AWDC initiatives and providing proactive assistance even before formal requests are made,” Koughna said.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA, led by the 8 Division in the North-West, has intensified counterterrorism and counter-banditry efforts in recent weeks, including raids, hostage rescues, and targeted engagements across Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto states.
Air Vice Marshal Jibia congratulated the GOC on his appointment and expressed confidence that the division would “drive positive change in the North-West’s security landscape.” He highlighted that awareness of the AWDC’s mandate remains limited within the military, noting that the centre’s work focuses on reviewing and developing Nigerian Air Force doctrine, enhancing operational competence, and facilitating joint operations through integrated exercises.
“Many personnel remain unaware of the AWDC’s core responsibilities. Our mission is to refine doctrine, improve air-ground and drone integration, and translate these concepts into practical frontline application,” Jibia said, stressing that effective air-ground integration is critical for rapid support of ground troops combating terrorists and mobile bandit groups.
Security analysts note that closer interoperability between Army operations and Air Force assets is increasingly vital as non-state armed groups adopt evasive tactics, disperse into forest belts, and exploit rapid cross-border mobility.
The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs and group photographs, symbolizing a renewed inter-service partnership in the fight against terrorism.
