The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has confirmed that 227 persons were abducted when armed men attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, in the early hours of Friday.

According to a statement released on Friday evening by Daniel Atori, media aide to the CAN chairman, 215 pupils and students alongside 12 teachers were taken during the attack, which reportedly occurred between 2am and 3am.

“I have just got back to the village after visiting the school where I also met with parents of the children to assure them that we are working with the government and security agencies to ensure our children are rescued safely,” the CAN official said.

He noted that some students managed to escape during the attack, and parents have begun retrieving their children as the school has now been shut down.

CAN appealed for calm and prayers, assuring that efforts were underway with security operatives, community heads and government authorities to secure the safe return of the abductees.

The association’s statement added:

“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect his people from all dangers.”

Earlier, the Niger State government disclosed that the school had resumed operations without authorisation, despite an earlier directive for boarding schools in the affected area to remain closed due to security threats.

The latest incident comes just days after 25 female students were abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, raising renewed concerns over safety in schools across the region.

Security authorities have yet to provide further details or update on rescue efforts.
