The Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced Sunday Akande to four years imprisonment for trafficking 360 grams of Cannabis sativa and 2 grams of methamphetamine.

Justice Nkeonye Maha, who delivered the judgment, convicted Akande based on the evidence presented by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The judge handed down a four-year jail term on each of the two counts, to run concurrently, meaning Akande will serve four years in total.

Justice Maha also ordered that the exhibits recovered from the convict be destroyed by the NDLEA, warning that a stiffer punishment awaited him if he reoffended after completing his sentence.

“Therefore, Akande is sentenced to four years imprisonment each for counts one and two, and the sentence shall run concurrently.
The exhibits found in his possession shall be destroyed by the NDLEA,” the judge ruled.

Earlier, NDLEA counsel, Mr Daniel Otunla, informed the court that the convict was arrested in January at the Gate area of Ibadan following intelligence from concerned citizens about his involvement in drug peddling.

Otunla told the court that Akande was caught with a sack containing 360 grams of Cannabis sativa and 2 grams of methamphetamine, a psychotropic substance prohibited under Nigerian law.

He said the offence contravened Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
