The President General of the Abavo Clan Union, Mr. Justine Onyeibe, has solicited intervention from the Federal Government regarding the overlooked dualisation project of the Agbor-Amukpe Road.

Speaking to reporters at the Abavo Town Union hall in Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, on Friday, Onyeibe remarked that the deplorable condition of the decade-old project has rendered it a “perfect hunting ground for kidnappers,” placing commuters in a position of vulnerability to ambush.

He articulated, “The dismal, pothole-ridden, single-lane segments, which frequently deteriorate into muddy paths during the rainy season, constitute not merely an inconvenience; they serve as the foremost facilitator of criminal activities in our area.

“The contract for this crucial economic corridor was awarded in two phases in 2014. Although contractors were mobilised from 2015 to 2016, the undertaking has since been neglected.

“The human and economic ramifications of this neglect illustrate a scenario of ‘perishable dreams,’ where agricultural products such as yam, cassava, plantain, and tomatoes ‘decay in mounds by the roadside’ due to farmers’ inability to transport them to distant markets.

“The dualisation of this road represents nothing short of a transformation for Abavo, with significant potential repercussions for Agriculture, Commerce, and Industry. ”

He contended that a completed roadway would significantly reduce transportation expenses, attract large-scale agricultural investors and processing facilities, generate employment opportunities for the youth, and elevate Abavo from a mere transit town to a commercial center.

“Our message to the Federal Government is straightforward and unequivocal: eradicate the menace of kidnapping on this roadway by finalising its dualisation,” he added.

In his comments, the representative of the Abavo kingdom’s monarch, Chief Odigie Yusuf, who serves as the Chief of Staff to the king, urged both the Federal and state governments to assist the community.

He stated that if the dreadful road is not repaired, the recently sanctioned flyover by the state government at the Agbor-Uromi junction will be rendered futile, lamenting that the road has posed significant risks to residents and motorists amid the escalating rate of kidnapping incidents in the vicinity.
