FATHER OF BRIDE KIDNAPPED IN SOKOTO SAYS ABDUCTORS CONTACTED COMMUNITY BUT MADE NO RANSOM DEMAND

The father of a bride kidnapped alongside 12 others in Chacho village, Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, says the abductors contacted the community two days after the attack but made no ransom request.
Malam Umaru Chacho, whose daughter was seized with her friends during wedding preparations, confirmed on Monday that the attackers called and insisted on speaking with the village’s traditional ruler.
“Yes, they have contacted us. When they called, they said we should connect them with the traditional ruler of the town, but we refused. We asked them to speak with us instead, but they declined, insisting they wanted to speak to our traditional ruler,” Umaru said.
The attack reportedly occurred during preparations for a wedding ceremony, leaving several villagers injured. One relative of the bride, who tried to resist the abductors, suffered a gunshot wound and narrowly survived.
Umaru expressed grave concern over escalating insecurity in the community, noting that more than 30 people have been killed in Chacho over the past five years due to repeated bandit attacks.
He also lamented government neglect, highlighting the absence of essential public services in the large rural settlement.
“Despite our population, we don’t have a police outpost, we don’t have a functional hospital, and many essential amenities are missing. This has made life even harder for our people,” he stated.
Residents say the lack of adequate security has emboldened criminal groups and left communities particularly vulnerable during social events.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the latest abduction, and families remain on edge as they await further communication from the kidnappers.
Chacho and neighbouring villages have faced persistent threats from banditry, kidnappings, and violent raids for years, with repeated appeals for government intervention still unmet.
