The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its indefinite strike, with members expected to resume work on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 8 a.m.

The chapter’s president, Dr. George Ebong, confirmed the development to Channels Television on Friday, explaining that the decision followed the intervention of the Senate Committee on Federal Territory Area Councils and Ancillary Matters.

Ebong, however, disclosed that none of the doctors’ demands had been met, but said the committee assured members of a meeting with the FCT Minister to address lingering issues.

The FCT chapter of NARD had declared an indefinite strike last week over unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2023, unexplained deductions from allowances, and the non-upgrade of qualified resident doctors who had completed specialist training but were still being paid as medical officers.

In its earlier statement of September 1, 2025, the association demanded immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, and clearance of other salary backlogs.

Other demands include the payment of 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, restoration of recognition for West African postgraduate membership certificates, issuance of membership certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and resolution of welfare issues affecting resident doctors in Kaduna State and at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

Resident doctors, who dominate emergency wards in Nigeria’s hospitals, are regarded as vital to healthcare delivery nationwide.
