The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi (SAN), has arraigned more than 400 individuals suspected of terrorism-related offences for prosecution.

Judiciary correspondent Austin Anyebe reports that the trials are currently taking place at the Federal High Court complex in Abuja.

The prosecution team, led by the AGF and supported by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), is handling the case against the defendants.

This latest proceeding follows a similar mass trial conducted in April 2026, during which 508 defendants were tried. Out of that number, 386 were convicted, while 8 were discharged and 2 acquitted. Several of those convicted received prison sentences of up to 20 years.

The current defendants are facing charges bordering on terrorism, aiding and abetting insurgency, and terrorism financing.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has constituted a special panel of judges to oversee the proceedings.

While the Federal Government is represented by the Attorney General, indigent defendants are receiving legal representation through the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.

The mass trials are part of efforts to speed up the prosecution of long-standing terrorism cases, with hearings now being held in Abuja instead of the military detention facility in Kainji, Niger State.
