A fire broke out on Monday at Afriland Towers, a six-storey building housing a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and other offices in the Marina area of Lagos Island.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the high-rise as panic gripped the busy commercial hub. In some of the clips, unidentified individuals were seen attempting to jump from the building, while others were rescued with the aid of ladders by residents and passersby.
A large crowd gathered outside the building, with many visibly alarmed by the incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the development in a statement signed by Deputy Controller General Ogabi Olajide.
“A fire outbreak is currently being battled at a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The call was received at 13:38 hours, and fire crews from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and Sari Iganmu Fire Station responded,” the statement read in part.
The fire reportedly started in the inverter room located in the basement before spreading smoke across multiple floors of the structure.
Authorities noted that evacuation of occupants was ongoing, while firefighting efforts had helped reduce panic prior to the arrival of emergency responders.
As of press time, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
