FIRE ENGULFS LAGOS SHOPPING COMPLEX, BUT NO INJURIES REPORTED

A fire gutted a shopping complex and nearby shops along Amore Street, Ajegunle, Boundary area of Lagos, destroying goods valued at millions of naira. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident occurred on Wednesday morning.
According to a preliminary report signed by LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu on Thursday, the fire was first reported at around 2:40 a.m. via LASEMA’s 767/112 toll-free emergency lines. This prompted activation of the state’s emergency response plans from its Cappa Base in Oshodi.
The LASEMA Response Team arrived at the scene by 3:22 a.m. and found active flames consuming the one-storey complex, which housed multiple clothing dealers. The high volume of combustible materials in the shops contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a power surge following the restoration of electricity ignited the fire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
LASEMA immediately conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the area, and implemented safety measures to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring structures. Coordinated interventions by LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police Force successfully contained the fire, preventing escalation.

The incident resulted in the total destruction of the shopping complex and adjacent shops, along with all goods stored inside. Structural assessments are now required for the affected building.
LASEMA has urged commercial property owners in the area to review fire safety measures and storage protocols to prevent similar incidents. Continuous monitoring of the site is ongoing to prevent any re-ignition of the fire.
