A potential fire disaster was averted on Tuesday at the Senate wing of the National Assembly following the swift intervention of lawmakers who successfully contained a fire outbreak before it escalated.

The incident occurred at the kitchen section of Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.

The committee, chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, had just ended the screening exercise when smoke was suddenly noticed billowing from the area, causing brief concern among lawmakers and staff present.

Eyewitnesses said Senator Ekpenyong, alongside Senator Salihu Mustapha, acted promptly to control the situation and prevent the fire from spreading.

Preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by a microwave oven reportedly left switched on in the kitchen compartment.

Their swift response ensured that the fire was extinguished before causing significant damage to the facility or disrupting activities within the National Assembly complex.

No casualties or injuries were recorded, and normal activities resumed shortly after the situation was brought under control.
