KADUNA COURT REJECTS EL-RUFAI’S BAIL APPLICATION

By: Balogun Ibrahim
The Kaduna State High Court has dismissed the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing a nine-count charge over alleged abuse of office.
Delivering the ruling on Monday, Justice Diruis Khobo held that the application lacked merit, stating that the defendant failed to provide sufficient and convincing evidence to warrant the court’s discretion in granting bail. According to the judge, no credible documents or reliable materials were presented to support the request.
The court proceedings took place in the absence of El-Rufai, who remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

Although the court denied the bail request, Justice Khobo ordered the anti-graft agency to allow the former governor unrestricted access to his medical team or any healthcare facility of his choice within Nigeria for necessary treatment.
The judge further directed that El-Rufai remain in ICPC custody pending the conclusion of the trial and adjourned the case until July 7 and 8 for continuation of proceedings.
El-Rufai, who served as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023, is being prosecuted by the ICPC over allegations that he breached public procurement and financial management regulations in the award and execution of government contracts during his administration.
He has pleaded not guilty to all nine charges. While his lawyers argue that the case is politically motivated and without merit, the ICPC maintains that it possesses substantial documentary and witness evidence to prove the allegations.
The trial has continued to draw widespread public attention due to El-Rufai’s influence in Nigerian politics and his standing as one of the country’s most prominent former governors.
