The Marine Police Unit of the Lagos State Police Command has rescued a 23-year-old man, Joshua Babalola, after he allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, after officers of the Marine Police received a distress report that a young man had plunged into the lagoon.

Marine police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene and, with the assistance of local fishermen in the area, successfully pulled the victim out of the water alive.

After the rescue, Babalola identified himself as a painter living in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State. He reportedly said he had travelled from Ibadan earlier that day without informing anyone.

He further disclosed that he decided to jump into the lagoon due to financial hardship and overwhelming feelings of hopelessness. His mobile phone was also lost in the water during the incident.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the victim had been stabilised and was under police care, while efforts were underway to trace and contact his family.

She noted that this was the second rescue of its kind within three months in the lagoon area.

Adebisi also stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and security agencies in preventing and responding to emergencies, urging residents, fishermen, boat operators, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly.

The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across Lagos State and encouraged continued public cooperation with security agencies.
