The federal government’s last evacuation flight from South Africa will arrive in Lagos on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the foreign affairs ministry‘s spokesperson, said the flight, run by Air Peace, is set to leave Johannesburg with 315 people returning home at 1:30 am.
Ebienfa said the flight is expected to reach Murtala Mohammed International Airport by 6:30 am.
This will be the fifth evacuation flight and the seventh group of Nigerians brought back from South Africa due to the xenophobic violence.
More than 1,000 Nigerians had said they wanted to go back.
The fourth evacuation flight arrived on July 9 with 282 people, making the total number of Nigerians repatriated from South Africa since the flights started on June 11 equal to 1,141.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the foreign affairs minister, encouraged Nigerians to take this opportunity to return home.
Her message came as two more Nigerians were found dead in South Africa, raising the official count of Nigerian deaths in the country since the recent xenophobic violence to four.
Some people who were repatriated have claimed the number is actually higher.
The minister promised the federal government will make sure no Nigerian who wants to go back will be left behind.
