The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Federal Ministry of Power to strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria’s power sector.

The commitment was made by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Clifford Oparaodu, when he received the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, alongside senior officials of the ministry during a courtesy visit to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the commission.

During the visit, Tegbe described the ICPC as one of the government’s key institutions and stressed the importance of building a strong partnership with the commission to improve accountability across the power sector.

According to the minister, the ministry requires the ICPC’s guidance, support, and collaboration in addressing challenges affecting the sector, particularly as it works to improve electricity generation and service delivery.

He noted that about 30 per cent of the sector’s challenges are linked to vandalism, adding that the ministry has several cases that require the commission’s expertise in handling anti-corruption and enforcement processes.

Tegbe also revealed that Nigeria’s electricity generation has improved, with power output now exceeding 5,000 megawatts. He expressed confidence that sustained collaboration with institutions like the ICPC would help consolidate the progress already achieved.

“We need people with your expertise to support us, and we look forward to building a sustainable and long-term partnership with the Commission,” he said.

Responding, Oparaodu congratulated Tegbe on his appointment and commended the ministry for recognising the ICPC as a strategic partner in efforts to reform the power sector.

He acknowledged the country’s persistent electricity challenges, expressing optimism that improved power supply would stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities, and drive economic development.

Oparaodu explained that the commission’s three-pronged mandate of enforcement, prevention, and public education places it in a strong position to support the ministry in promoting accountability and good governance.

He assured the ministry that the ICPC would use its enforcement powers to ensure contractors and other stakeholders entrusted with public resources are held accountable and prevented from defrauding the government.
