NDLEA ARRESTS 37 SUSPECTED DRUG TRAFFICKERS, SEIZES 345KG OF NARCOTICS IN EDO STATE

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 37 suspected drug traffickers and seized 345.421 kilogrammes of narcotic substances during operations in June 2025.
State Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju disclosed this on Monday while reviewing the command’s anti-drug trafficking and substance abuse efforts. He said the arrests comprised 25 males and 12 females.
“These arrests were part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and addressing concerns on substance abuse within communities,” Ofoyeju stated.
According to the breakdown of seizures, the first batch included 310.485kg of cannabis, 0.3415kg of psychotropic substances, and 0.3175kg of methamphetamine.
Additional seizures included 33.226kg of cannabis sativa, 0.67kg of psychotropic substances, 0.373kg of methamphetamine, 5 litres of codeine syrup, and 0.004kg of cocaine. These were reportedly abandoned at various locations.
In a significant blow to local drug production, the NDLEA also destroyed illegal cannabis farms spanning 7.27 hectares in the Okhuse and Ugbada Uzebba forests in Owan West Local Government Area. The estimated yield from these farms was put at 18,184.7128kg.
Ofoyeju also highlighted the command’s legal efforts, stating that 11 drug-related cases were filed in court in June, with five resulting in convictions. A total of 107 cases remain pending at the Federal High Court in Benin.
On the rehabilitation front, the Drug Demand Reduction Unit provided counselling to 32 individuals 18 males and 14 females and organised a series of awareness programmes targeting various organisations across the state.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, Ofoyeju said, “The NDLEA remains steadfast in its mandate to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Our goal is to dismantle drug cartels through continued vigilance and active community involvement.”
