The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the country from Saturday through Monday, warning residents in coastal areas to brace for possible flash flooding.

In its three-day weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet predicted predominantly sunny skies with patches of clouds across the northern region on Saturday, with early morning thunderstorms expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states.

The agency said the weather would intensify later in the day, with thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall expected over parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.

For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms and moderate rains over Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa states and the Federal Capital Territory, while Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT are expected to experience similar conditions during the afternoon and evening.

In the southern region, the agency predicted moderate rainfall over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa states in the morning, with rainfall expected to spread across the entire region later in the day.

On Sunday, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states in the North.

By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected to affect Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa states.

The agency also predicted morning thunderstorms over parts of Niger, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory in the North-Central region before widespread thunderstorms develop across the zone later in the day.

For the South, NiMet forecast light rainfall in the morning over Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers states, with moderate rainfall expected across the region by evening.

On Monday, the agency said partly cloudy conditions would prevail across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe states before moderate rainfall spreads across the region later in the day.

The North-Central region is expected to experience sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning, followed by widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening.

NiMet also forecast cloudy conditions across the South, with light morning rains over Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states before thunderstorms and moderate rainfall extend across the region later in the day.

The agency advised residents to take necessary precautions, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas.

It also cautioned that the persistent rainfall forecast for Nigeria’s coastal states could trigger flash flooding, urging residents to avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.

NiMet further advised motorists to refrain from driving during heavy downpours, urged households to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and warned residents to stay away from tall trees due to the risk of falling branches and uprooted trees.

The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning, while encouraging the public to stay updated through its official weather advisories.
