The Kano State Hisbah Board says it has carried out mandatory medical screening for 720 out of the 3,000 couples registered for the state’s planned mass wedding programme.

The Deputy Commander-General of the Board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed this in a telephone interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday.

According to him, the screening exercise has so far covered 720 couples drawn from the 24 local government areas of the state.

He added that couples residing within the Kano metropolis have been instructed to report to the state headquarters of the Agency for the Control of AIDS in the Na’ibawa area for their medical screening.

Aminudeen also explained that screening for couples from the remaining local government areas would be conducted at a later date, which will be announced by the board, advising affected applicants to await further information.

He further stated that the board would communicate the schedule for the next phase of the exercise in due course.

The medical screening exercise for the mass wedding programme began on Monday, May 8, 2026, covering couples from 24 of the state’s 44 local government areas.

Aminudeen had earlier indicated that the exercise would commence with those 24 LGAs, listing them as Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai, and Madobi.

The Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, reintroduced the mass wedding initiative as part of efforts to reduce social vices such as prostitution, particularly among vulnerable young women from low-income families.
