The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says no fewer than 1,565,873 Nigerians have successfully completed their voter registration as of June 26 under the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The commission disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja in its seventh-week update on Phase III of the CVR, noting that the figure comprises 620,933 citizens who completed online pre-registration and 944,940 who registered physically at designated centres across the country.

INEC, however, stated that the figures remain provisional, pending a comprehensive data clean-up during the period for public claims and objections, after which the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) will be deployed to eliminate duplicate or invalid registrations.

According to the commission, Kano State recorded the highest number of registrants with 118,207, representing 7.55 per cent of the national total. Lagos followed with 78,360 registrants, accounting for five per cent, while Delta recorded 76,395 registrations, representing 4.88 per cent.

The electoral umpire also announced the temporary suspension of voter registration in Ekiti and Osun states following the just-concluded governorship election in Ekiti and the forthcoming governorship election in Osun, in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The gender distribution showed that women accounted for the majority of new registrants, with 821,276 registrations representing 52.45 per cent of the total, while men accounted for 744,597 registrations, representing 47.55 per cent.

INEC further revealed that young people between the ages of 18 and 34 dominated the exercise, with 1,082,985 registrants, representing 69.16 per cent of the total. Those aged between 35 and 49 accounted for 331,376 registrations, or 21.16 per cent, while older age groups made up the remaining percentage.

By occupation, students emerged as the largest category of new registrants with 384,093 registrations, representing 24.53 per cent. They were followed by business owners with 333,539 registrants, representing 21.30 per cent, while farmers and fishermen accounted for 273,627 registrations, representing 17.47 per cent.

The commission also disclosed that 18,919 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) registered during the exercise.

INEC urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to complete their registration through its online portal or visit designated Continuous Voter Registration centres nationwide to ensure they are eligible to participate in future elections.
