The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, on Thursday visited the Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo, Brazil, widely recognised as the largest museum dedicated to the African Diaspora in Latin America.

The museum is home to more than 6,000 works of art, artefacts and historical objects that document over five centuries of the cultural and historical contributions of people of African descent in Brazil.

In a statement issued in Ibadan by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaye, the monarch was accompanied on the visit by his Queen Consort, Ayaba Abiwunmi.

According to the statement, the Museu Afro Brasil, located in the Manuel da Nóbrega Pavilion within Ibirapuera Park, was established in 2004 by renowned Brazilian artist, curator and museum director, Emanuel Araújo.

The statement described the museum as one of the most significant cultural institutions in Latin America, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history, heritage and achievements of Black people in Brazil.

It noted that the museum’s vast collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, ethnographic artefacts, slavery-era documents, plantation equipment, traditional religious objects and a wide range of artistic and cultural exhibits.

According to the statement, the institution presents Brazil’s history through the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants, highlighting the enduring influence of African culture on the country’s identity and development.

It added that the museum also houses thousands of statues, illustrations, masks, dolls, clothing, furniture, installations and historical memorabilia that reflect the richness of Afro-Brazilian heritage.

The statement further noted that although much of the museum’s printed information is presented in Portuguese, English-speaking guides are available to provide visitors with detailed explanations that bring the exhibits and their historical significance to life.

“It is almost impossible to appreciate the entire museum in a single visit. The stories behind the exhibits are both moving and inspiring, making it one of the finest museums in Latin America,” the statement said.
