The wife of the Inspector General of Police and National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun, has urged members of the association to unlock their individual potentials and embrace transformational leadership for personal and collective advancement.

She made the call on Wednesday during her welcome address at the 2025 POWA Annual Convention held in Lagos.

Themed “Unlocking POWA Potentials and Transformational Leadership,” the event brought together wives of serving police officers as well as widows of fallen officers from across the country.

“This convention is an occasion held annually basically for continuous growth of its members,” Dr. Egbetokun said.

“It is an occasion that brings together all Police officers’ wives, both serving officer’s wives and the wives of those who lost their husbands at the point of discharging their duties.”

She described POWA as “a nongovernmental organization with the objectives of alleviating the challenges faced by the wives, widows, orphans and children of Police officers within the Police community and the broader society.”

Emphasising the importance of the convention’s theme, she noted, “Transformational leadership focuses on inspiring and motivating followers to achieve extraordinary results by fostering a shared vision, promoting innovation, and building trust through transparency and integrity.”

She went further by identifying four core traits for unlocking individual potential: “Identifying and nurturing individual strengths; empowering team members to take ownership; fostering a culture of innovation and learning; providing guidance and mentorship.”

Dr. Egbetokun also recounted the association’s recent interventions under her leadership, including empowerment programs in various states which have impacted over 3,000 women, widows, orphans, and persons with disabilities. Beneficiaries received items such as sewing machines, grinding machines, wheelchairs, ovens, starter packs, and flood relief materials.

“All this are in line with my three-point agenda, which are: EDUCATION FOR DEVELOPMENT, QUALITY HEALTH CARE DELIVERY, AND BETTER LIFE FOR ALL,” she stated.

Dr. Egbetokun expressed appreciation to key stakeholders and supporters of the convention. “With utmost humility I wish to appreciate the executive governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his invaluable support to the success of this convention,” she said.

She also thanked the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, while paying special tribute to the Inspector-General of Police and POWA’s Grand Patron, her husband. “Thank you for being an inspiring leader and a supportive backbone for me and the Police officers’ wives association,” she added.

Dr. Egbetokun concluded her remarks by encouraging attendees to seize the opportunity of the convention: “I urge you all to make the best use of this opportunity to explore your potentials.”

The event is slated to run for three days, from Wednesday through Friday.
