S’COURT UPHOLDS LAMIDO’S SON CONVICTION OVER UNDECLARED $40,000

Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

Aminu Sule Lamido, the son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, appealed the $40,000 forfeiture to the Federal Government, but the Supreme Court rejected the petition on Friday. The rulings of the lower courts were upheld when five-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro, decided that the appeal lacked substance. The court said that the appeal was “doomed to fail” and formally upheld the forfeiture of the cash to the Federal Government in unanimous ruling read by Justice Abubakar Sadiq Umar and delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro.

He was arraigned on February 4, 2013, before the Federal High Court in Kano on a one-count charge of false declaration of foreign currency under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act and related laws.

On July 12, 2015, the trial court found him guilty and mandated that the Federal Government get quarter of the money that was not disclosed. On December 7, 2015, the Kaduna Court of Appeal affirmed that ruling. Aminu Lamido, dissatisfied, filed an appeal with the Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the lower courts’ rulings. Following the adoption of written briefs by both sides’ attorneys at the most recent session, the Supreme Court postponed making decision.

The Supreme Court upheld the forfeiture judgment in its decision on Friday, finding that the appeal was without merit on all counts. The court also upheld the Federal High Court’s and the Court of Appeal’s correct assessment of the evidence and their legal rulings.
