Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has said his father’s rise to greatness was closely linked to the privileged background into which he was born.
According to the musician, being the son of renowned nationalist and women’s rights activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti afforded Fela opportunities and advantages that contributed to his success. Despite this, he stressed that Fela’s achievements were also the result of hard work, determination and resilience.
Speaking during a recent interview on Ada’s Room, the Grammy-nominated artiste said his family places a strong emphasis on hard work rather than relying solely on inherited status or connections.
“In life, nothing comes from nothing. My father, Fela, could not have become the person he was without being Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s son. If he had been born into a different family, the world might never have heard of him,” Seun said.
He added that while family influence can create opportunities, it does not guarantee success.
“I may be called a nepo baby, but my father is not the one performing on stage for me, writing my songs or going on tour in my place. His name can open doors, but once you step through them, you are expected to live up to the standard he set,” he explained.
Seun noted that coming from a celebrated family often comes with intense expectations, as people assume greatness is inherited and are less willing to be patient with an artiste’s growth and development.
“The pressure is enormous because people expect you to already possess that greatness. They are less inclined to invest in your growth or give you time to develop,” he said.
