The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a woman and another suspect over the alleged killing of her newborn baby girl in Damaturu, describing the incident as a “heinous and inhuman act.”
The command disclosed that the infant was allegedly strangled shortly after birth, with her remains concealed in a box and abandoned behind a mosque in the Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, said operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit acted swiftly after receiving a distress report concerning the alleged murder and concealment of the newborn’s remains.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the child’s mother was allegedly involved in the incident.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a female suspect, who recently gave birth to the baby, was allegedly involved in an incident where the child was strangled and the remains concealed in a box before being abandoned behind a mosque at Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu,” the statement read.
The police said prompt action led to the arrest of two suspects, who are currently assisting investigators.
“Following swift police action, two suspects were arrested and are currently assisting the investigation. The case remains under investigation as the Command continues to gather facts and ensure that justice is served,” Abdulkarim stated.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, condemned the alleged killing, stressing that every child has a fundamental right to life, dignity and protection under the law.
“The incident is a heinous and inhuman act. Every human life is precious and must be protected,” the police commissioner said.
Jibrin warned that the command would not tolerate violence against children or vulnerable members of society and assured that anyone found culpable would face prosecution.
“The command will not tolerate any act of violence against children or any vulnerable person, and anyone found responsible will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he added.
The police further reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights of children, noting that every child deserves care, protection and dignity regardless of circumstances surrounding their birth.
The incident comes just days after the Anambra State Police Command foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby girl in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on June 22, the Anambra command said officers attached to the Oyi Divisional Headquarters acted on credible intelligence to prevent the sale and secured both the mother and child.
The police said the infant was safely reunited with family members to ensure proper care and support.
The two incidents have heightened concerns over crimes involving infants and vulnerable children, prompting renewed calls for stronger protection measures and enforcement of child rights laws across the country.
