BREAKING: TINUBU SEEKS SENATE APPROVAL FOR NEW SERVICE CHIEFS
President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm his newly appointed service chiefs following a major reshuffle in Nigeria’s military leadership.
In a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu urged lawmakers to give urgent consideration to the request to enable the appointees assume office and strengthen the country’s security architecture.
The President named Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

According to Tinubu, the nominations were made in accordance with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act and reflect his administration’s commitment to reposition the armed forces for improved efficiency and national security.
The appointments follow a recent overhaul of the country’s military hierarchy announced by the Presidency on October 24, which saw the exit of former service chiefs and the emergence of a new defence leadership team.
The Senate has referred the request to its Committee of the Whole, which is expected to screen the nominees before final confirmation.
The reshuffle comes amid growing security concerns across several regions, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and separatist tensions in the South-East.
If confirmed, the new service chiefs are expected to bring fresh strategic direction and operational synergy to the Nigerian Armed Forces in tackling the nation’s complex security challenges.
