President Bola Tinubu has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over his handling of erosion challenges during his tenure as Anambra State governor, questioning his leadership abilities ahead of the 2027 general election.

Tinubu made the remarks on Friday at an All Progressives Congress rally held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he urged voters not to support Obi in the forthcoming presidential election.

The President compared Obi’s record in addressing erosion in Anambra with his own efforts to tackle coastal challenges in Lagos State and those of Akwa Ibom Governor, Umo Eno.

Tinubu accused the former Anambra governor of failing to confront erosion during his time in office.

“He’s in one party, they called NDC, who is running for President; he ran away from erosion in Anambra State. He could not confront erosion,” Tinubu said.

He added that he had confronted the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos, while Governor Eno had also taken steps to address erosion in Akwa Ibom.

The President further questioned Obi’s leadership credentials, citing his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequent move to the NDC.

According to Tinubu, the former Anambra governor’s political decisions raised concerns about his ability to provide stable leadership.

“They lack leadership character and traits,” he said.

Tinubu also faulted Obi for leaving the PDP after previously being associated with the party, describing the decision as an indication of poor political leadership.

“If a man that once upon a time was a baby of PDP became a father of PDP and because of a little inconvenience he ran away from that party and formed a dangerous aide-de-camp in another party, is that a leadership trait? Is that a leadership character?” he queried.

The President also challenged Obi’s ambition to become Nigeria’s next president, insisting that he lacked the capacity to lead the country.

“And he wants you to vote for him; it’s not for banana. He cannot put a house in order,” Tinubu said.

The rally was part of Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom State, during which he inaugurated projects executed by the Umo Eno-led administration before attending the APC political gathering.
