The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has officially denied reports that Cynthia Chukwundah, the woman accused of setting her lover ablaze in the Choba area of Rivers State, is a student of the institution.
The Rivers State Police Command had earlier identified Chukwundah as a 300-level undergraduate of UNIPORT, currently hospitalized after sustaining burns from the incident, which led to the death of 32-year-old Sunny Amadi, her alleged lover.
However, in a statement issued Tuesday evening by the university’s Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the institution clarified that its records do not reflect any enrollment or academic affiliation with Chukwundah.
“Following thorough internal checks and verification of our student records, the university wishes to categorically state that Cynthia Chukwundah is not a student of the University of Port Harcourt,” the statement emphasized.
UNIPORT extended its sympathies to the families affected by the tragic event and reiterated its commitment to supporting the ongoing police investigation. “We deeply regret the loss of life associated with this unfortunate event and express our condolences to the families affected,” Kpenu stated.
The university also cautioned the public and media against disseminating unverified information, urging all parties to allow law enforcement agencies to complete their investigation without undue speculation.
“We urge members of the public and media outlets to refrain from spreading unverified information and to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a full and impartial investigation,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the police have confirmed that Chukwundah remains under watch at a medical facility and will be interrogated once her condition improves. The incident, believed to have stemmed from a domestic dispute related to pregnancy, continues to draw public attention and outrage.
