Croatian football legend and 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has officially signed a one-year contract with Italian giants AC Milan, the club confirmed on Monday.
The 39-year-old midfielder, who spent over a decade at Real Madrid, joins Milan after completing a medical earlier in the day. His contract runs until June 30, 2026, with an option to extend for another year until June 2027.
“AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club,” read a statement from the 19-time Serie A champions.
Modric, who turns 40 in September, bid farewell to Real Madrid following the Club World Cup, ending a storied career in Spain that began in 2012 when he transferred from Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking in a video message posted on the club’s official social media channels, Modric said: “I’m very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career. A big hug to everyone.”
AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri, who recently returned to the club, had hinted last week that Modric would join the Rossoneri following his exit from Madrid.
Although the veteran midfielder has joined the club, Italian media reports suggest he will begin training with his new teammates in August, just weeks before Milan’s Italian Cup opener on August 17.
Modric is expected to bring experience and leadership to the Milan midfield as the club eyes domestic and European success in the upcoming season.
