JUST IN: REMAINS OF FORMER PRESIDENT BUHARI DEPART LONDON FOR FINAL BURIAL IN DAURA
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari have departed London for Daura, Katsina State, ahead of his state burial scheduled for Tuesday.
The body was flown aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft and left the United Kingdom before 8:00 a.m., accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other top government officials.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to receive the late president’s remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina by noon. From there, the body will be transported to Buhari’s hometown of Daura for Janazah (Islamic funeral prayers) and interment.
The Federal Government earlier declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to honour the late statesman, who died at 82 after a prolonged illness in a London hospital on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
A respected figure known for his upright stance and integrity, Buhari first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and later served two terms as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Hailing from Daura in Katsina State, Buhari was widely known across the North as “Baba Buhari,” earning cult-like support for his discipline and spartan lifestyle.
Though he initially failed in three presidential bids 2003, 2007, and 2011 Buhari’s persistence paid off when he co-founded the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 through a merger involving his Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Bola Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), factions of the PDP, and APGA.
His eventual election in 2015 marked Nigeria’s first democratic power transition from an incumbent president to an opposition candidate.
The late leader’s passing has continued to draw tributes across the nation and the world, with his burial expected to be a moment of national reflection and mourning.
