The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disowned a viral list circulating online, which claims that the results of candidates from 151 secondary schools have been withheld due to examination malpractice in the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The document, dated August 4, 2025, and titled “Urgent Notice to the Following Secondary Schools Regarding Withheld Results,” alleged that the schools listed were involved in examination malpractice and instructed their principals to appear before WAEC’s Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days. It bore the name of Dr. Florence Ajayi, purportedly Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities at WAEC Nigeria.

The letter further instructed the affected principals to provide supporting documentation and candidates’ exam scripts by August 16, 2025. Some of the schools named in the fake list included Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary (Ikorodu), Atlantic Hall (Epe), Top Faith International School (Uyo), Corona Secondary School (Agbara), Christ the King College (Onitsha), and several others across the country.

However, WAEC has firmly refuted the list, declaring it fake and unauthorised. Through its verified social media handle, @waecnigeria, the examination body warned the public to disregard the information.

The official statement read: “Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled. Meanwhile, WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from?”

“Do not accept any message that is not on our handles and accredited media,” the statement concluded.

WAEC had earlier on Monday announced the release of the 2025 WASSCE results, stating that the results of 192,089 candidates representing 9.75% of the total were being withheld over suspected malpractice. However, no official list of affected schools was released.

According to the Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, only 38.32% of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a sharp drop from the 72.12% recorded in 2024 a 33.8% decline.

Dangut attributed the performance dip to the council’s newly intensified anti-malpractice strategies, which aim to uphold the credibility of the examination process.
