Arsenal’s return to the Emirates Stadium for pre-season action ended in disappointment on Wednesday as the Gunners were beaten 3–2 by Spanish outfit Villarreal CF in the opening match of the 2025 Emirates Cup.

Despite featuring all six of their new summer signings in front of a packed home crowd, Arsenal struggled defensively and were punished by a clinical Villarreal side that included former Gunner, Nicolas Pépé.

Pépé, who made over 100 appearances for Arsenal before his departure in 2023, opened the scoring in the 30th minute, capitalising on a rebound in the box to finish from close range. Although he refrained from celebrating, the goal marked a symbolic return to north London for the Ivorian winger.

Just five minutes later, Villarreal doubled their lead after Karl Etta Eyong tapped in another rebound, taking advantage of a spilled save by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

Arsenal responded swiftly, as Gabriel Martinelli’s corner found new signing Christian Nørgaard unmarked at the far post, and the Danish midfielder headed in his first goal for the club to make it 2–1 before the break.

The second half saw Mikel Arteta rotate his squad, introducing Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, and 15-year-old academy star Max Dowman, who made his senior debut.

However, Arsenal’s backline was breached again in the 53rd minute, this time by Arnaut Danjuma, who calmly slotted past Raya on the counterattack to restore Villarreal’s two-goal advantage.

Dowman made an immediate impact after being brought down in the box, winning a penalty. Captain Martin Ødegaard stepped up and converted to bring the score to 3–2 with 15 minutes remaining. Despite late pressure, the Gunners were unable to find an equaliser.

As per Emirates Cup tradition, the game concluded with a penalty shoot-out regardless of the match outcome. Arsenal fell short again, losing 4–3 on penalties.

The fixture served as an important test of squad depth ahead of the new Premier League season, with new signings Viktor Gyökeres, Mikel Merino, and Ethan Nwaneri among those who impressed in spells.

Arsenal wrap up their pre-season campaign on Saturday, August 10, against Athletic Club in the final Emirates Cup fixture. They kick off their Premier League season away to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 17.

With just days to go, Arteta has a short window to address defensive lapses and sharpen his attack as the Gunners prepare for another title charge.
