The Osun State Police Command has arrested six suspected cult members alleged to be terrorising Osogbo and neighbouring communities.

Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Osogbo, noting that the arrests were part of ongoing efforts by Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to curb cultism and related crimes in the state.

According to Ojelabi, two suspects, identified by their nicknames “Orife” and “Aga,” both 29, were apprehended on August 21 during a student union week celebration at a higher institution in the state. The duo reportedly confessed to being members of Aiye and Buccaneer confraternities.

Similarly, on August 19, four suspected cultists were arrested in Okuku Town by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit following credible intelligence. The suspects allegedly admitted to belonging to the Aiye confraternity.

In a separate operation, police stormed the hideouts of suspected members of the Eiye confraternity, led by one “Gafari,” who had been terrorising Gbeja and Oke-Baale areas of Osogbo. The suspects fled on sighting security operatives, but arms and weapons, including two cut-to-size guns, cutlasses, an axe, and live cartridges, were recovered.

Ojelabi said all arrested suspects will be charged to court after investigations, while efforts continue to track down the fleeing cultists.

Commissioner Gotan urged students across the state to shun cultism and concentrate on their studies, warning that anyone caught engaging in such activities will face the full wrath of the law.
