One person has been confirmed dead, while over 300 farmlands and crops have been destroyed by flooding in Nasarawa, Kokona, and Doma Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State.

The Director General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), Benjamin Akwash, disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing in Lafia after an assessment of the affected communities.

Akwash explained that the agency had been sensitising residents in flood-prone areas and engaging stakeholders on the need to adopt safety measures in line with weather forecasts from relevant authorities.

He, however, expressed concern over the attitude of some residents.

According to him, “People are finding it difficult to move to safer grounds. They prefer to remain on their ancestral lands despite repeated alerts from authorities. This is unacceptable. We cannot continue to play laxity with human lives, there must be a way out.”

The NASEMA DG added that the state government is prioritising sustainable flood prevention strategies to address recurring disasters rather than focusing solely on post-disaster interventions.

He confirmed that a detailed assessment of the destruction is still ongoing across Nasarawa, Kokona, and Doma, where farmlands were submerged and one life was lost.

“This is a major setback in our drive to achieve food security and sufficiency. Preliminary reports show that more than 300 farmlands with crops have been completely washed away,” he stated.

Akwash further revealed that the government has concluded plans to distribute food and non-food relief materials to victims and other disaster-hit communities.

He urged residents in high-risk areas—particularly those in the five most vulnerable LGAs of Doma, Nasarawa, Toto, Awe, and Kokona—to relocate to safer locations, stressing that lives and property must be protected as the rainy season intensifies.
