Over 10 victims of a ghastly accident on the Benin–Auchi highway were rescued on Saturday following the swift intervention of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

The governor, who was en route to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area with his convoy, ran into a heavy traffic gridlock shortly after the bypass and stepped down to assess the situation.

It was gathered that Okpebholo discovered several passengers in critical condition, many bleeding profusely, while bystanders watched helplessly.

Moved by the scene, Okpebholo directed his aides to deploy two security Hilux vehicles to evacuate the injured to a nearby hospital.

He personally supervised the rescue, ensuring victims—including a severely wounded woman—were carefully carried into the vehicles for urgent treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred when the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, drove against traffic and collided with three fully loaded commercial minibuses. The impact left many injured and caused a massive traffic jam.

Okpebholo remained at the scene until the last victim was taken to hospital under security escort before continuing his journey.

His swift action drew applause from residents, motorists, and sympathisers present.

As of press time, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps nor the state government had issued an official statement on the incident.
