DHQ ORDERS IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF UNAUTHORISED CHECKPOINTS ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has ordered the immediate dismantling of all non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints across major highways in the country, citing concerns over operational inefficiency and heightened risks to civilians and security personnel.
The directive, contained in an internal communication dated December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu “for the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS),” noted that the headquarters had observed a growing proliferation of unapproved checkpoints within several Joint Operations Areas (JOA).
According to the document, while road security operations remain important, the unchecked spread of unauthorised checkpoints has begun to undermine operational efficiency, disrupt free movement of civilians and security forces, and expose troops to unnecessary risks. Key routes affected include Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu; Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti; Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano; and Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge.
“In view of the foregoing, I am directed to respectfully convey that the services Headquarters hereby instructs all Theatre Commanders and Formation Commanders to ensure the immediate dismantling of the non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints within their respective JOAs,” the statement read.
Commanders were further directed to strictly adhere to only approved control point locations and to replace unnecessary static posts with enhanced mobile patrols and intelligence-driven operations.
“Commanders are further to ensure strict compliance with the approved control point locations and maintain only those essential for operational and security purposes, while dominating the expanse of routes with aggressive mobile patrols and human intelligence gathering,” the directive added.
The order comes amid heightened national concern over insecurity and the need to balance security operations with the protection of civilian movement and safety.
