The National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Abuja has granted an interlocutory injunction filed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the FCT Administration, ordering workers under the Joint Union Action Committee to suspend their ongoing strike.

The plaintiffs had taken the Chairman, Rifkatu Iortyer, and Secretary, Abdullahi Umar Saleh, of the union to court under suit number NICN/ABJ/17/2026, seeking to prevent them and their members from engaging in any industrial action, picketing, or lockout.

Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, Justice E.D. Subilim noted that while the case constitutes a trade dispute and met the necessary legal requirements, the defendants’ right to strike is not absolute.

Justice E.D. Subilim ruled that workers are barred from participating in a strike once a dispute has been referred to the National Industrial Court. He added that any strike already in progress must be suspended until the case is resolved.

“An interlocutory injunction is hereby granted, restraining the defendants and their representatives from further engaging in any industrial action against the claimant,” Justice Subilim said.

He noted that the order will remain in effect pending the court’s final determination of the suit.
