Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is mourning the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died on Tuesday after being involved in a road accident, according to the Media.
The late retired military officer was reportedly involved in the accident in Umunede, Delta State, and was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital in Agbor, also in Delta State.
Ndidi’s club, Besiktas, confirmed the incident on Tuesday in a statement released via their official X account.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s beloved father, Sunday Ndidi, following a fatal traffic accident,” the club stated.
“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased. We extend our heartfelt condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
Ndidi recently led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he also scored his first international goal.

During celebrations after his headed goal against Tunisia in Nigeria’s second group match, the midfielder paid tribute to his late father and his admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo.
Explaining the gesture, Ndidi told journalists in Morocco that the celebration was inspired by his father, who frequently spoke about Kanu Nwankwo.
“I thought about my dad. I had seen the video before, and it just came to my mind. I decided to do it for him,” he said.
Ndidi, who has often spoken about growing up with his father in the military barracks, was born and raised in Lagos.
