There was panic on Sunday night at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, after suspected herdsmen attacked some students, leaving an unconfirmed number injured.

The victims, mostly first-year students, were reportedly on their way to a night study session inside the school when they were ambushed around 9 p.m. along Ifite Road, a route described by residents as lonely and unsafe at night.

One male student sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, after reportedly losing three fingers while attempting to defend himself. His twin sister was also said to have been wounded during the attack.

A source within the institution said the victims attempted to flee upon sighting the attackers but were overpowered before help arrived. The alarm raised by the female victim reportedly attracted passersby who rescued the injured student and took him to the hospital.

University officials, including the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, and Chief Security Officer, Ken Chukwura, were said to have visited the victims on Monday.

Confirming the incident, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations/Protocol, Louis Njelita, said the university’s security unit had been notified and appropriate action taken.

The attack has heightened concerns about student safety around the campus perimeter, particularly along poorly lit and isolated routes.
