The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State on Monday inaugurated a 57-member campaign council to drive the re-election bid of Governor Biodun Oyebanji ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
Chairman of the council and Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, expressed confidence that the poll would be a walkover for the ruling party, describing the election as a referendum on Oyebanji’s leadership.
Bamidele, who spoke at the inauguration ceremony in Ado Ekiti, said the governor’s developmental projects and programmes since assuming office had positioned him for another term.
He also revealed that the party had mapped out mobilisation plans aimed at delivering at least 10 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the six states of the South-West during the 2027 general elections.
“The re-election of the governor will be a walkover for the APC. Governor Oyebanji has been consciously paddling the oars of our state with courage and vision, with confidence and synergy and with patriotism and unalloyed commitment to the well-being of over 3.8 million residents,” Bamidele said.
According to him, the task before the party extends beyond the governorship election to preparations for the 2027 general elections, scheduled between January 16 and February 6, 2027.
Bamidele urged party leaders and members to intensify mobilisation efforts by encouraging residents to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration and collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
“With a population of 3.8 million, Ekiti only has 987,647 registered voters based on the 2023 records. If we are committed to this task, we can increase our enrolment by 50 per cent before the exercise is suspended in August 2026,” he said.
He called on members to engage in grassroots mobilisation through house-to-house, street-to-street and community-to-community campaigns to expand the party’s support base.
In his remarks, Governor Oyebanji thanked Bamidele for his support and assured that his campaign would focus on issues and development plans rather than personal attacks.
“Our campaign will focus on engaging voters on policies, programmes and development plans for the state,” the governor said, while urging candidates of other political parties to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Members of the campaign council also pledged their commitment to securing victory for the governor.
A former Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, said the campaign would be grassroots-based and aimed at converting public support for the governor into votes.
Similarly, a member of the House of Representatives, Niyi Ojuawo, described Oyebanji as a marketable candidate and vowed to intensify mobilisation efforts across his constituency.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several party leaders and government officials, including Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye; Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye; National Secretary of the APC, Ajibola Basiru; Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority Board, Dayo Adeyeye; and former senator Bode Ola, among others.
