Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, on Monday expressed support for the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader following the killing of his father and predecessor in US and Israeli strikes.

In a statement, Sudani said Iraq has confidence in the new leadership’s ability to navigate “this critical stage” and strengthen “the unity of the Iranian people” amid ongoing challenges. He reaffirmed Iraq’s solidarity with Iran and its backing of “all steps aimed at ending the conflict.”

Iran maintains significant political influence in Iraq and supports armed groups whose power has expanded both politically and financially. For decades, Iraq has served as a proxy battleground between the United States and Iran, making the appointment geopolitically significant.

Pro-Iran Iraqi groups were among the first to welcome Khamenei’s succession. The Badr Organisation described it as a “blessed continuity of the path of the Islamic revolution,” while Asaib Ahl al-Haq said the choice reinforced Iran’s role as “a central pillar in the axis of resistance.”

Kataeb Hezbollah, part of the Islamic Resistance of Iraq, hailed the selection as reflecting a “profound understanding of the existential challenges confronting the nation” and described Mojtaba as “the best successor to the best predecessor.”

Senior Iraqi politician and moderate cleric Ammar al-Hakim also congratulated the new leader, wishing him “success in following the path of his martyred father… in upholding the word of truth.”

The endorsement by both government officials and armed factions underscores Iran’s continued influence in Iraq and the broader Middle East amid escalating tensions with the United States and Israel.
