2027: DATTI BABA-AHMED SAYS NONE OF TINUBU’S CHALLENGERS, INCLUDING PETER OBI, CAN IMPROVE NIGERIA

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has declared that none of the politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election including his former running mate Peter Obi can improve Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye and released on Saturday, Baba-Ahmed responded to a question about advice for Tinubu’s leadership. He urged the president to prepare to leave office, but not to hand power to any of the current contenders.
“I will simply advise uncle (Tinubu) to please prepare to hand over and move away, but not to the people contesting against him because none of them will improve Nigeria,” he said.
When asked to clarify whether this applied to all opposition candidates, he confirmed: “None of that part. Tinubu should leave the stage. All those people contesting against him, too—they were all in bed together at some point or another.”
Pressed specifically about Peter Obi, Baba-Ahmed replied: “Including Peter Obi, I’m sorry to say.”
He noted that Obi had previously been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while it was in power, and argued that Nigeria needs a complete break from the existing political class. “Tell me one politician who has never been in a ruling party. Tell me,” he challenged.
When the host pointed out that Baba-Ahmed himself had been active in politics and served in the National Assembly, he insisted he had never belonged to a ruling party. He explained that while he was in the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), it was the leading opposition party. After the CPC merged into the APC and that party took power, he resigned and never held an APC membership card.
Baba-Ahmed stressed that his criticism was based on the shared political histories of those seeking to replace Tinubu, not merely party labels.
Baba-Ahmed and Obi were the Labour Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2023 election. He later left the Labour Party for the Peoples Redemption Party, while Obi moved to the African Democratic Congress and then the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which has named him its presidential candidate for 2027.
