TARIFF HIKE: COURT FINES MULTICHOICE N150 MILLION, ORDERS ONE MONTH FREE SUBSCRIPTION TO NIGERIANS
The well-known pay-TV operator Multichoice Nigeria, the owners of DSTV and GOTV, was fined ₦150 million by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal for contesting the court’s jurisdiction. Additionally, the firm was mandated to give its subscribers a free one-month subscription.
The decision was made on Friday by a three-person panel headed by Thomas Okusu.
Due to a case filed by Barrister Festus Onifade, who argued that Multichoice’s eight-day notice of price rise was insufficient, the tribunal had already barred Multichoice from increasing membership prices without providing appropriate notice.
In a lawsuit, Onifade accused DSTV of unfairly raising membership costs without giving consumers a month’s notice and exploiting that to obtain temporary injunctions.
Multichoice’s attorney argued that price control cases had already been decided, but Onifade’s emphasis on the insufficient notice rather than the price increase itself prompted the tribunal to uphold its jurisdiction and rule against Multichoice.
The plaintiff’s substantive claim was then scheduled for a hearing on July 3 by the court.
