A woman has been lynched and set ablaze by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, after allegedly making blasphemous remarks.
The victim, identified as Amaye, reportedly owned a local restaurant where the incident began. Witnesses said she made comments considered offensive while responding to a customer who jokingly proposed marriage, citing the tradition of the Prophet.
She was initially taken to the palace of the District Head, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation. However, the mob overpowered the officers and killed her before setting her body on fire.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the tragic event occurred on August 30, 2025, around 2:00 p.m.
“Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and the woman was set ablaze before the reinforcement of security teams could arrive at the scene,” Abiodun stated.
He condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that efforts are ongoing to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible. He also urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
The incident has reignited concerns among locals and human rights advocates over recurring mob violence in parts of Nigeria, with renewed calls for proactive measures to safeguard lives and uphold the rule of law.
